CHARLOTTE, NC / UPSTATE SC / WESTERN NC — As winter weather moves into the region, Schneider Tree Care is advising homeowners to take simple, safe steps to help protect trees and shrubs from potential snow and ice damage.
Heavy, wet snow and ice can place significant stress on trees, particularly evergreens such as Leyland cypress, magnolias, hollies, and similar species that retain foliage through winter. Accumulation that freezes can rapidly add weight, increasing the risk of limb failure and permanent structural damage.
Trees and shrubs that are maintained with proper pruning and comprehensive plant health care programs tend to be more resilient during weather events. Healthy plant structure, balanced growth, and strong root systems all play a critical role in a plant’s ability to withstand snow and ice loads and recover following a storm.
If conditions allow and it can be done safely, Schneider Tree Care recommends gently removing early snow accumulation from evergreens using a broom or rake before it freezes. Branches should be brushed upward and lightly, avoiding aggressive shaking. If ice has already hardened, homeowners are advised to leave it in place to prevent additional damage.
Following the storm, some temporary bending or minor damage is normal and often resolves as ice melts. Homeowners should contact a certified arborist if they observe cracked limbs, hanging branches, or sudden decline.
Schneider Tree Care encourages homeowners to prioritize safety during winter weather and reminds clients that its team will be available to assist with post-storm evaluations and care as conditions improve.
